The first story I wrote that mattered came out of a fight with Chekhov. I’d been assigned The Lady with the Dogin a survey course at Michigan, and I remember thinking: this isn’t a story, it’s a silence with characters standing inside it. I tried to write something that loud. It failed. But in the failure I found the question that still drives my work—how do you make a reader feel what a character won’t say?
My thesis collection at Michigan explored that question across twelve stories set in the Rust Belt—drawing on Carver’s compression, Ferrante’s interiority, and Saunders’s moral imagination. Three of these stories were published in Ploughshares and The Iowa Review, and one was a finalist for the Pushcart Prize.
Columbia’s MFA, with Professor Ben Marcus’s experimental fiction workshop and the density of New York’s literary community, is where I want to push this work further…
- •Name a specific Marcus workshop exercise
- •Expand on the Carver influence
- •Connect Rust Belt setting to Columbia's NYC lens
